Eco-Management and Audit Scheme

The Eco-Management and Audit Scheme is a voluntary scheme of the EU that aims to encourage organizations to continually improve their Environmental performance by means of implementing a reliable Environmental Management System (EMS). The EMAS scheme was revised with Regulation (EC) No 1221/2009 of 25 November 2009, and the new EMAS III came into effect in January 2010. It can be implemented in all sectors and is open to all types of organizations in the public and private sector striving to improve their Environmental performance.
EMAS guides the organization to make an initial Environmental review of its current status and implement a vigorous Environmental Management System, fully compliant with legislation requirements. Organizations are required to actively engage their employees and engage in a dialog with stakeholders. They are expected to issue an Environmental statement with information on their Environmental performance.

The focus of EMAS is on:
  • Applying strict requirements in terms of measuring and assessment of Environmental performance with regard to the goals set, as well as continual improvement of this performance;
  • Compliance with Environmental regulations and legislation;
  • Active engagement and participation of employees;
  • Assessment of main Environmental indicators, creating multiyear comparability within one organization and among different organizations;
  • Provide information on Environmental performance through the publishing of an Environmental statement;
  • Verification of the implemented EMS, of Environmental performance and of legal compliance by an accredited body and a subsequent registration as an organization certified to EMAS.

EMAS main criteria are aligned with the ones of the International Standard Environmental-management-systems_49_65" target="_blank">ISO 14001, as the two standards have the same objective – ensuring good Environmental management. In fact, requirements of ISO 14001 are an integral part of EMAS, and at the same time EMAS builds upon the International Standard adding more requirements, for example for an initial Environmental review and for legal compliance.
EMAS and Energy Management Systems (e.g., ISO 50001) have similar requirements as well. As energy management is part of EMAS, the organizations registered with EMAS have already improved their energy efficiency and, therefore, they fulfil most of the requirements of Energy Management Systems.

What are the benefits of registration with EMAS?
  • The best Environmental and financial performance possible:
  • Reduced Environmental impact;
  • Improved energy efficiency;
  • Effective use of resources;
  • Lower expenses, as a result.
  • Excellent management of risks and opportunities:
  • Ensured compliance with legal requirements;
  • Reduced fees related to Environmental regulations;
  • New business opportunities.
  • Increased engagement and motivation of employees:
  • Fewer accidents and better Quality at the work place;
  • Increased awareness and commitment of staff;
  • Better relationship with employees.
  • Excellent credibility and reputation:
  • Enhanced reputation among stakeholders;
  • A marketing advantage thanks to EMAS registration;
  • Enhanced relationship with authorities, customers and the community.

Registration with EMAS gives an opportunity to organizations to improve their Environmental and overall performance and to show customers, authorities and other organizations their commitment to Environmental management.
