ISO 26000:2010 Guidance on social responsibility


ISO 26000 provides guidance for organizations wishing to implement, maintain or increase their social responsibility, by means of establishing socially responsible policies and practices, and thus to increase their impact on sustainable development. There is growing need and expectation for organizations to become more socially responsible and recognize their impact on the society and the environment.

Organizations of all type, size and nature can apply and benefit from the requirements and principles outlined in ISO 26000. It will be useful for private companies, non-profit organizations and government entities alike to recognize the need and start implementing the principles of social responsibility, or to exercise due diligence, become more involved and improve their existing practices.

ISO 26000 focuses on issues such as social equality, the environment and organizational governance. This standard recommends that organizations identify the important issues that they can address in their sphere of influence, considering the nature of their business, and apply measures to improve their impact.

Organizations would benefit from following the guidance outlined in ISO 26000 and increasing their socially responsible behavior, as they would increase stakeholders' engagement and positively influence the value chain, employees, members and consumers, as well as business associates. It is the best way to improve an organization's image and reputation in the community and become more competitive.

ISO 26000 is intended as a standard providing the main principles and guidance on socially responsible behavior and practices and the means to implement them, and it is not intended for the purposes of certification.
