BRCGS Food Safety

BRCGS are food industry leading standards and include:

Originally developed in response to the needs of members of the British Retail Consortium, BRC Glaogal Standards are one of the highest goals in the food industry. Certification to the BRC standard through an independent third-party audit gives confidence to customers and partners about the Quality and safety of food products and reduces the need to carry out separate inspections by customers, which in turn leads to a reduction in costs for everyone.
 
Scope of the BRCGS Foor Safety 
The standard defines the requirements for production, processing and packaging of:
  • own-brand and customer-brand processed foods
  • raw materials or ingredients for use by food service companies, catering companies and/or food manufacturers
  • primary products, such as fruits and vegetables
  • pet food and animal feed
  • products of primary processing of animals.

BRCGS Foor Safety Principles
The standard is based on four key components:
  • senior management commitment – the standard places a high priority on senior management commitment to an effective Food Safety plan and the development of a comprehensive policy to guide activities
  • developing a Food Safety plan – a HACCP-based hazard and risk assessment system. The standard requires the development of a Food Safety plan incorporating all Codex Alimentarius principles.
  •  implementation of a product safety and Quality management system
  • creation of prerequisite programs – the basic Environmental and operational conditions in the food business necessary for the production of safe food.
 
The current Issue 9 focuses on:
  • promoting understanding and developing product safety culture
  • ensuring global applicability, compatibility with the Codex General Principles of Food Hygiene and comparison with the benchmarking requirements of the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI)
  • updating requirements related to internal audits, root cause analysis, preventive actions and incident management
  • providing greater clarity for facilities that complete the primary processing of animals and produce animal feed.
